Healthcare transformation does not always happen inside hospital walls. Sometimes it happens one patient at a time, through sustained commitment that changes a life.

For more than a decade, Tamie Sturgis, LPN, a home care nurse with the Lehigh Valley Skilled Nursing BAYADA Office, has provided that kind of care. Through skilled coordination, relentless advocacy, and long-term dedication to a young traumatic brain injury survivor, she has helped restore independence and possibility. In recognition of that measurable impact, Nurse Approved proudly names Tamie Sturgis a Healthcare Hero.

A Decade of Relentless Commitment

Tamie works 40-50 hours per week and is responsible for every aspect of her client, Emily Brong’s, care. Emily is a young adult and traumatic brain injury survivor whose trajectory has been shaped by the consistency and coordination Tamie provides.

She delivers skilled nursing care, coordinates all therapy services and medical appointments, and ensures continuity across providers. In-home care fragmentation can derail progress. Tamie prevents that through vigilance, organization, and long-term commitment.

The results are tangible.

Through her dedication and encouragement, Emily has gained the strength and confidence to work and live far more independently. Her progress reflects what sustained home-based support can make possible.

Emily’s mother has shared that without Tamie’s care and persistence, Emily would very likely be bedbound today.

For nurses who understand the complexity of traumatic brain injury, that outcome represents more than routine care. It reflects sustained clinical oversight and belief in a patient’s potential.

Advocacy Beyond the Bedside

Tamie’s impact extends beyond direct care.

She is a tireless advocate for home health care funding and access. Alongside Emily, she participates in legislative events, such as lobby days at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and in media interviews to raise awareness of the need for sustainable home-based care funding.

Her advocacy for better wages and sustainable home health funding has amplified awareness of the challenges facing home care nurses and the families who depend on them, helping elevate the broader conversation around access to home-based services.

Her efforts extend beyond Emily, supporting families who rely on home health care to remain safely in their communities.

For the nursing profession, this reflects leadership at its strongest: using clinical credibility and real-world experience to influence systems, not just individual outcomes.

Why Tamie Sturgis Earned This Honor

The Nurse Approved Healthcare Hero Award recognizes individuals whose work makes an extraordinary difference through compassion, leadership, advocacy, innovation, and service. It is not based solely on titles, tenure, or visibility, but on meaningful impact.

Tamie Sturgis embodies what it means to be a Nurse Approved Healthcare Hero. Her impact extends far beyond her patient, Emily Brong, supporting families who depend on home healthcare to live safely and independently in their communities.

Tamie exemplifies this standard in four measurable ways:

Patient-Centered Impact: She has transformed Emily’s quality of life and independence through skilled, coordinated care.

Advocacy and Community Impact: She publicly champions home health care access and funding, strengthening services for families across her state.

Integrity and Professional Excellence: She has provided consistent, high-quality care for more than a decade.

Leadership and Professional Influence: She serves as a visible, trusted voice for home care nursing, elevating the profession and illuminating the realities of community-based care.

The Power of Everyday Nursing Leadership

Home health nurses often operate without the visibility afforded to acute care settings. Yet their influence can be lifelong.

Tamie Sturgis represents the steady professionals who strengthen healthcare systems through long-term commitment and genuine human connection. Her work demonstrates that sustained nursing presence can change not only clinical outcomes, but also a person’s independence and sense of possibility.

For her dedication to one patient, her advocacy for many, and her representation of home care nursing, Tamie Sturgis, LPN, is a Nurse Approved Healthcare Hero.

If you know someone who makes healthcare better through their actions, leadership, or service, we invite you to nominate them. The future of healthcare is shaped by the people who show up every day to make a difference.
