Empowering School Health Professionals Series

School health staff are often the first line of defense in identifying acute illness or physical distress in students. This session covers core pediatric assessment methodologies, focusing on normal vs. abnormal developmental findings across age groups (early childhood through adolescence). Participants learn to utilize the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (Appearance, Work of Breathing, Circulation to Skin) for rapid “across-the-room” triage. Special emphasis is placed on assessing nonverbal, medically fragile, or neurodivergent students who cannot reliably articulate symptoms. Staff review early subtle indicators of clinical deterioration and establish clear escalation steps for emergency medical response.
